The racing interest continued into 1896 with a longer distance course in the 1896 Paris-Marseille-Paris event. The enteries raced from Paris to Marseilles and back, a distance of 1063 miles. Panhard-Levassor cars were the top finishers, including the winning Panhard-Levassor driven by Mayada. Unfortunately, Emile Levassor's Panhard-Levassor crashed during the race, which led to his death the following year.

The 1896 Panhard-Levassor included its first four-cylinder engine, appearing in the 1896 Paris-Marseilles-Paris Panhard-Levassor race cars whereby doubling the horsepower from the prior year. With that said, the brakes, unchanged, consisted of a spoon against the back tire supplemented by a belt tightening on a drum on the transmission. Tiller steering, solid rubber tires and candle-lamp illumination served to travel tree-lined unlit, unpaved roads which the race course offered.
